i realized recently that the combo between the internet and my personal knowledge (or the want for knowledge) is a strong and powerful thing!
i also recently discovered that i keep paying good money for things i can easily (or with some effort) do myself. i am a fan of FutureShop...and honestly, what techy person isn't? (unless you aren't into the big company factor-but that's a whole different story).
Future Shop is a company that tries to be the one-stop-shop for all things technical. you buy a computer - they want to install all the software (for a fee), you buy some RAM - they want to install it (for a fee), you buy a car stereo - they have a garage where they can install it (...for a fee). notice the pattern? these fees range from $20 and up.
my past two purchases, that would require the 'install for a fee' i decided to tackle on my own...this is my story:
JOB#1 :: RAM INSTALL
i first realized this when FutureShop wanted $40.00 to install a 1GB DDRII RAM stick for my notebook. my thought process was that i could handle this and to scrap the + $40.00.
i went home, Googled "RAM DDRII Install" and there it was - (**VERY VERY EASY**) step-by-step instructions (with pictures!)
100% success. i'm now running on 1GB (max limit) instead of 512MB.
JOB#2 :: CAR DECK INSTALL
my car got broken into about a week or two back, and one thing that the punks took was my car stereo faceplate. this is sort of my fault, because i did have a detach option. long story short - i needed a new car stereo!
i found the perfect deal - a nice JVC mp3-cd-aux player, detach faceplate, rear inputs, and it was an ONLINE sale! perfect, drop $79.94 and i'm set.
Oh wait ! there was that additional $49.99 for installation.
forget it! i'm going to try this on my own.
it was actually reasonably easy. in total, it took me maybe 30 minutes. and all i needed to buy were 'butt connectors' from Canadian Tire; 3 packs @ $1.69 a piece.
[**note: install just went from $49.99+tax to $5.07+tax**]
